Phase II – Restoration

Current Situation
  • Lowell Mason, born in Medfield, Massachusetts in 1792, was the most famous American musician of the 19th century. His birthplace was slated for demolition unless it could be moved.
  • In August 2010 the Lowell Mason Foundation obtained approval to move the house to Green Street in Medfield.
  • On April 19, 2010 the Lowell Mason Foundation moved the house to 59 Green Street.
  • The Foundation is now raising funds to secure and restore the home and develop the location as a museum, and office space to promote music education.

Who was Lowell Mason?
  • Leader in American Church Music
    • Composer of over 1,600 hymns
    • Set Nearer my God to Thy to music
    • Wrote the music to Joy to the World
  • Father of music education in America
    • In 1827 appointed president of the Handel and Haydn Society
    • 1832 Founder of the Boston Academy of Music
    • First Music Superintendent of the Boston school system
    • Conducted teacher training conventions which profoundly influenced the teaching of music in schools
    • Wrote the music to Mary Had a Little Lamb
Why are he and his birthplace relevant today?
·      Lowell Mason is relevant because without his work to train and professionalize the teaching of music in public schools we wouldn’t have music programs as a part of the regular curriculum as we know them today.
·      The Lowell Mason House contains many features, which are unique to early American architecture. Scientific testing of the home has identified attic timbers, which date from 1650 and determined that the roofline dates from 1744.

The Lowell Mason Foundation Goals are:
  • Establish a Lowell Mason museum
  • Make the house available for research and collegial study of early American architecture and construction techniques
  • Provide historical focal point for the beginning of music education in the United States.
  • Provide office space for music educators
  • Provide practice and recital space for area students and musicians
  • Deliver cultural programs to the community
  • Support current and future music educators through educational outreach for music in our public schools.
