On Saturday, September 25th, the Lowell Mason Foundation participated in the annual “Discover Medfield Day” sponsored by the Medfield Employers and Merchants Organization. Over 150 organizations take advantage of this day to inform the community about themselves and their mission.

The Medfield High School “Groove Merchants” perform at Medfield Day - Paul Wagenseller- Tenor sax/ singer, Cara Abecunas- Alto sax, Chris Davis- Guitar, Nick Cruickshank- Drums, Luke Rosenfeld- Piano, and Alex Rosenfeld- Trumpet
This year, in addition to having a booth to perform outreach on the importance of music education and fundraise to save Lowell Mason’s birthplace, the Foundation had the help of a number of Medfield High School musicians who performed during the day to draw attention to the cause. On a stage constructed from an antique sleigh, both a violin duo and a jazz/funk ensemble performed for the crowd. With over 10,000 people in attendance for Medfield Day, the Foundation had a very successful day reaching out to the community.
Lowell Mason was the first music teacher in American public schools and is well known to music educators. The Lowell Mason Foundation is seeking to raise funds to save Lowell Mason’s birthplace. This historic house, located in Medfield, Massachusetts, is threatened with demolition unless it can be moved.
At this time the move of the house is tentatively scheduled for the 2nd week of November. A meeting took place on Thursday, September 23rd at Town Hall with town officials, the Historic Commission, developers, the Lowell Mason Foundation, and others. The group successfully worked out most of the details for the house move. Work on the new foundation is to start as soon as plans and permits allow, and the preparation for the house move itself is awaiting a final review of bids.
The Foundation continues to raise monies to fund the move and securing of the house and its future restoration. Those interested can go to our website
